It is known as Catawba or Catalpa worm while it is in the larval stage and emerges as white with black spots. They ultimately develop a darker color as they get older.
I photographed this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on the side of the auto tour road located at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge (Oklahoma).
The fore-wings of the male, which are yellow, have four “tiger stripes” in black.
Females are dimorphic and can be either yellow or black.
The dark morph is almost entirely black, whereas the yellow morph has a noticeable band of blue dots down the hind-wing, making it look more like the male.
I photographed this Luna Moth Caterpillar while it was crossing a county road in the Ouachita National Forest here in Arkansas.
Prior to cocooning, the larvae may turn reddish-brown from green like in my photo.
