Great Blue Heron Lifting Off

A Great Blue Heron lifting off from the Charleston City Lake Dam here in Arkansas. I photographed it with the tips of its toes still touching the ground.

I posted a photo a few days ago of this same Great Blue Heron Taking Off from the deep section of this same lake near the Dam.

Pied-billed Grebe Holding A Shad By Its Tail

I was at Charleston City Lake in Charleston, Arkansas when I photographed this Pied-billed Grebe Holding A Shad By Its Tail.

I have been seeing three Pied-billed Grebes feeding near the dam for the past several months. When I photographed this one a couple of days ago, it was alone.

I photographed it catching two of these large Shad and eating them before going back to the middle of the lake. This is also the same Grebe I posted a photo of yesterday with the reflection (Pied-billed Grebe and Reflection).

Pied-billed Grebe and Reflection

I photographed this Pied-billed Grebe and Reflection at the Charleston City Lake in Charleston, Arkansas.

Rarely do Pied-billed Grebes fly.

They frequently dive slowly, to a depth of no more than 20 feet, especially when threatened.

After diving for around 30 seconds, they might travel to a more isolated part of the water where only the head is visible to see the threat disappear.

Great Blue Heron Taking Off

I photographed this Great Blue Heron Taking Off from the deep section of the Charleston City Lake in Charleston, Arkansas.

Because of their size and ability to forage in deeper waters, Great Blue Herons can access habitats that are inaccessible to most other heron species.

The Great Blue Heron often forages in shallow waters, typically less than 2 feet deep, or along the water’s edge both during the day and at night, but notably at dawn and dusk.

Pied-billed Grebe With Shad

I photographed this Pied-billed Grebe with Shad while sitting in my pickup at the Charleston City Lake. The Charleston City Lake is in Charleston, Arkansas.

A pair of Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) will come near the small dam to catch Shad every couple of hours during the early morning hours.

Feeding on small fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates are the main sources of nutrition for these birds.
To find food, they dive.
