Three-toed Box Turtle

I photographed this Three-toed Box Turtle crossing the road at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

The Three-toed Box Turtle is a species of terrestrial turtle native to North America. They are named for the three toes on each of their hind legs. They have a high-domed carapace (upper shell) and a hinged plastron (lower shell) that allows them to close tightly and protect themselves from predators. They feed on a variety of foods, including insects, fruit, and carrion. They are also known for their long lifespan, with some individuals living for more than 100 years in captivity.

Box Turtle On The Rocks

This Box Turtle was crossing a section of the auto tour road located at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

This photo of the Box Turtle On The Rocks will show you how difficult it is to get close to wildlife while driving the auto tour road. These rocks make lots of noise when you drive over them.
