Mourning Dove Carrying Pine Needles for Nest Building

Spring nesting activity is picking up in my Arkansas yard, and this Mourning Dove gave me a good look at it. I photographed the bird carrying pine needles, clearly focused on nest building as it moved through the yard.

Mourning Dove Nest Building in My Arkansas Yard

Seeing a Mourning Dove with pine needles in its bill is a simple but useful sign of active nest building. Doves often gather thin twigs, grasses, pine needles, and other light material to build a small platform nest. This bird looked busy and purposeful, moving through my yard with nesting material already collected.

Mourning Doves are known for building pretty flimsy-looking nests. Even so, they get the job done. In this case, I later saw the nest being built in one of my pine trees near the road, so I know exactly where this bird was taking the material.

In my yard, pine needles are easy to find, so it makes sense that this dove used them. The needles also stood out well in the photo and made the behavior obvious. I like photos like this because they show more than just the bird’s appearance, they show what the bird is doing.

Photography Notes for This Mourning Dove Photo

I made this photo from my deck using a bean bag on the rail for support. The Mourning Dove was in a natural area of pine straw and fresh grass, which helped tell the story of the scene. The pine needles in its bill were the key detail, so I wanted a clean angle that kept attention on that part of the bird.

Camera Settings:

  • Camera: Canon EOS R5 Mark II
  • Lens: Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM
  • Focal length: 800mm
  • Aperture: f/10
  • Shutter speed: 1/800 second
  • ISO: 4000
  • Exposure compensation: +1/3
  • Support: Bean bag on the deck rail

The soft background helped separate the bird from the yard, while the pine straw added context without pulling too much attention away. What makes the image work for me is the pine needles in the dove’s bill, because they clearly show nest-building behavior.

I always enjoy finding small signs that nesting season is underway. A Mourning Dove carrying pine needles may seem like a simple moment, but it tells a bigger story about what is happening right here in my yard.
