Last night, on October 17, 2024, I had the opportunity to photograph the Hunter’s Moon from my place here in Arkansas. This bright, full moon lit up the sky, offering a striking display that has captivated people for centuries.
What is the Hunter’s Moon?
The Hunter’s Moon is the first full moon following the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. It traditionally signaled the time to prepare for winter by hunting and storing food. Its name comes from Native American traditions, where tribes would hunt game in the bright moonlight to stock up for the colder months ahead.
Characteristics of the Hunter’s Moon
- Timing: This year’s Hunter’s Moon occurred in mid-October. Its appearance is marked by an extended period of moonlight just after sunset, making it appear larger and more prominent as it rises in the early evening.
- Brightness: The moon is particularly bright and has a deep, golden hue when it’s near the horizon due to scattering of light in the Earth’s atmosphere. As it rises higher, it transitions to a silvery tone.
- Orbit: The moon’s orbit causes it to rise soon after sunset for several days in a row, which historically made it ideal for hunters.
My Experience Photographing the Hunter’s Moon
Capturing the moon is a unique challenge. From the moment it rose, I noticed how quickly it shifted in brightness and color. I used a telephoto lens to bring out the lunar surface’s texture and details, such as craters and the distinctive dark plains known as “maria.” Despite the cloudless night, the light of the moon was so bright that it required careful adjustments in exposure settings.
Tips for Photographing the Moon
- Use a Long Lens: A telephoto lens (300mm or longer) allows you to capture more details.
- Stabilize Your Camera: A tripod is essential to avoid motion blur.
- Manual Settings: Set your camera to manual mode. Use a low ISO (100-400), a fast shutter speed (1/250 – 1/500), and an aperture of around f/8 to f/11.
- Focus Manually: Auto-focus can struggle with the moon’s brightness. Switch to manual focus and fine-tune.
- Shoot in RAW: This allows for more flexibility in post-processing, especially for adjusting contrast and sharpness.
