I know I can’t resist sharing photos of the Fox Squirrels that visit my backyard, but honestly, can you blame me? These furry residents are just so darn photogenic! Take a look at the one I photographed a few days ago.
This little guy is perched on the same favorite limb I captured another squirrel on a while back. Seems they all have a fondness for this particular spot! You might even recognize it from these photos [Fox Squirrel Lounging in My Backyard and The Fox Squirrel Strikes a Pose (Again!) ].
Today’s star, however, takes things to a whole new level. Check out that pose! It’s like he’s about to launch himself off the branch with that one leg propped up against the trunk. Cracks me up every time!
But the fun with these squirrels doesn’t stop there. I’ve also discovered a rather interesting dynamic between them and the birds that visit my feeder. Here’s the deal: I’ve learned to let the squirrels share the feeder occasionally. Now, before you all cry foul, hear me out!
When a squirrel hops onto the feeder, the birds don’t scatter in a panic. Instead, they politely take a pause on the nearby perch I’ve set up for them. It’s like they’re waiting for the furry hogger to vacate the premises. Interestingly enough, this also seems to translate to more frequent visits to the birdbath during these “squirrel feeder moments.”
The whole scene creates a fantastic opportunity to capture some truly unique wildlife interactions. You get the squirrels munching away, the birds patiently waiting their turn, and sometimes even a feathered friend taking a refreshing dip in the birdbath.
So, there you have it – another adventure with the fascinating Fox Squirrels of my backyard. Stay tuned for more backyard encounters! With these squirrels around, the next photo op could be anything.
Seeing this again in your photo makes me laugh!
Hi Steve the squirrel and the birds must be quite comical to watch. I myself and John my partner love birds
and we have two aviaries in the garden where we sit and watch their antics .Animals are much more clever than we give them credit for. My bird I have in the house is an example, for instance, she always comes to the front of her cage bends her head down for me to stroke her just as you would a dog. When I go to take her food dish and she is on it she will step aside for me to take it knowing full well I am going to replenish it with fresh food. Her name is Ziggy and she is 12 years old.
