Day 1 at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

After nearly two weeks at Black Mesa State Park, I arrived at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge on September 8th, ready for the next adventure. With my 13′ Scamp travel trailer set up at Doris Campground, I was all set for a 12-day stay in the heart of the refuge.

Wildlife Welcomes Me

Even before I finished setting up camp, the wildlife had already made itself known. A cottontail rabbit was hopping around, exploring my campsite as if to welcome me. Naturally, I couldn’t resist grabbing my camera and capturing a few shots.

As I continued settling in, I noticed a small lizard perched on a tree trunk right within my campsite. It was perfectly still, soaking up the warmth from the bark, giving me just enough time to photograph it before it darted off. This was one of those moments where wildlife surprises you when you least expect it—right next to my trailer!

Then, to top it off, a white-tailed doe decided to bed down right beside my campsite. She watched me as I worked, completely calm and content. It was a beautiful, peaceful way to kick off my time at the refuge.

Texas Longhorn Sighting

Later that afternoon, I couldn’t resist going out to photograph one of the refuge’s most iconic residents—the Texas Longhorn. I’ve written before about the history of these magnificent animals at the refuge check it out [here].

I spotted a Longhorn pushing through the brush and stepping into an open area. From the safety of my truck, I used my 800 mm telephoto lens to get some close-up shots. These animals can be unpredictable, so I always keep my distance and photograph them safely from the vehicle.

Wrapping Up Day 1

After a few hours of exploring the refuge and capturing images of the local wildlife, I returned to my campsite and relaxed in my Scamp, reflecting on the day. The first day at Wichita Mountains had already been a great success, and I couldn’t wait to see what the next day had in store.

Stay tuned for more stories and wildlife photos from my adventure! Tomorrow, I’ll share what I encountered on Day 2 at the refuge.

  1. I love all the pictures and commentary that go along with them. I too am a nature lover and feel sorry for those who do not take the time to just look around at all the beautiful wildlife around us.
