I photographed this Baby Coyote at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I didn’t see the Mom Coyote, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t around.

How I Got The Photo: Baby Coyote

I first saw this Baby Coyote on Saturday, and it was near the start of the auto tour road. I found it again Sunday about 100 yards from the first location. It would go into the cornfield when I got near it.

In the first photo, I was hand-holding my camera and lens. In the second photo, I had my camera and lens resting on a bean bag draped over the open window of my pickup.

Two Young Coyotes Coming Close

By |2023-02-04T07:22:07-06:00September 11, 2020|Categories: Coyote|Tags: , |

These two young Coyotes walked out of a field and came close to me. I think one of the Coyote is the same one I photographed in August (Coyote Pup Mousing). I also think they are two of the four I was seeing early in the summer in this same area (One Of Four Coyote Pups).

The young coyotes were near the Sandtown parking area at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I was standing outside my pickup hand-holding my camera and lens. I was outside my pickup because I saw that the Coyotes were going to walk out onto the road behind my pickup. They both walked past me within 8 to 10 feet. One turned and went back into the field, the other continued walking the road.

Coyotes are medium-sized mammals belonging to the Canidae family, which also includes wolves, foxes, and domestic dogs. Young coyotes are called pups, and they are born blind and deaf, and rely on their mother for food and protection. Coyote pups usually stay with their mother until they are about six to nine months old, after which they start to hunt and forage on their own. Coyotes are adaptable and [Read More…]

Coyote Wading Slough

By |2023-02-05T10:35:59-06:00July 29, 2020|Categories: Coyote|Tags: , , |

While I was watching and photographing a Whitetail Doe and her Fawn at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, a pair of Coyotes appeared. The Coyotes were on the opposite side of the slough from the deer but they crossed over to the same side. The female Coyote went into the thick vegetation while the male stayed in the water and walked toward the deer. The Coyotes were walking parallel to each other. When the Coyotes got within a few steps of the Deer the Doe became alarmed and fled with the Fawn. The Coyotes didn’t pursue the Deer. I continued watching the male Coyote wading in the water for several yards before disappearing out of sight.

I have seen Coyotes hunting the water’s edge before but this is the first time I have seen one wading in the water for a long distance.

Coyotes are known for their versatility and adaptability, and their ability to swim is just one example of their many survival skills. While they are primarily land animals, they are capable of wading in water and even swimming, if necessary.

In the wild, coyotes are often seen near bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, [Read More…]
