Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! March 17th brings thoughts of green—shamrocks, leprechauns, and the fresh renewal of spring. While I’ve previously shared a Green Tree Frog in honor of the day, this year, I’m featuring another vibrant resident of Arkansas: the Rough Green Snake.

A Master of Camouflage
This slender, lime-green beauty is an expert at blending in with its surroundings. The Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus) is one of Arkansas’ most fascinating reptiles. Harmless and delicate, it spends its time weaving through branches in search of insects. Its name comes from the slightly textured roughness of its scales, which catch the light in a way that makes its emerald coloring even more striking. I captured this image one summer in the Ouachitas, when the sunlight perfectly illuminated its vivid hues.

The Legend of Saint Patrick and Snakes
Saint Patrick’s Day often brings up the tale of Saint Patrick banishing snakes from Ireland. While the story is more legend than fact, I like to imagine that if any snake had managed to slip away, it would be a graceful escapee like this one—thriving in the green wilds of Arkansas instead of the Emerald Isle.
A Symbol of Renewal
For me, this snake symbolizes renewal. As spring unfolds, these creatures begin to stir, just like the rest of the forest. It’s a season of life, movement, and the quiet rhythms of nature. Whether you celebrate with a glass of green beer or simply by appreciating the beauty of the outdoors, take a moment to enjoy the season’s vibrancy.
How do you mark the day? Have you spotted any green wildlife recently? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments. Until next time, keep exploring the wild side of Arkansas!
