Looking Back on 29 Days of Camping in Oklahoma

After 29 days of camping, I have plenty to look back on from my Oklahoma camping trip. I stayed at Fort Supply Lake, Black Mesa State Park, and Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Now I am thinking about the wildlife I will miss and the birds and rabbits waiting back home.

I will miss the birds that kept me company during my stay at Doris Campground.

Oklahoma Camping Trip Highlights at Black Mesa

Two encounters at Black Mesa stand out: my first chance to photograph a Badger and my first Swift Fox sighting. I have photographed wildlife for years, but I still get excited about seeing something new through the camera.

I had wanted a good Badger photograph for years. During this trip, I got that chance while looking for Burrowing Owls near Black Mesa. I shared the encounter in My First Badger Photos at Black Mesa State Park.

The Swift Fox surprised me on a road I had not explored before. At first, I thought I was looking at a Red Fox. Getting a better look, then photographing it moving through the grass, made that outing one I will remember.

I wrote about that sighting in My First Swift Fox Encounter in Oklahoma.

Those two firsts gave me a lot to be thankful for during my time at Black Mesa.

The Wildlife I Will Miss at Doris Campground

At Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, I will miss the birds and the one Fox Squirrel that fed from my hand. Spending time with them at Doris Campground became a part of the trip I hated to leave behind.

I shared two Facebook reels from those visits. You can watch the Tufted Titmouse feeding from my hand and the Fox Squirrel feeding from my hand.

The Fox Squirrel was another visitor I will miss after leaving Doris Campground.

I enjoy heading out with my camera, but I also appreciate the wildlife I can watch around camp. I did not have to leave the campground for all my encounters.

The White-tailed Deer and Wild Turkey came to visit, too. Looking back through these photographs, I know I will remember those campground visits alongside the firsts at Black Mesa.

White-tailed Deer also came to visit during my stay at Doris Campground.

I cannot leave the Wild Turkey out of my campground memories.

Heading Home to My Arkansas Yard

From Fort Supply Lake to Black Mesa and Wichita Mountains, I have spent 29 days camping and photographing Oklahoma wildlife. I will miss being out there, but I look forward to checking on the visitors in my own yard.

I want to see the birds and rabbits again and get back to watching them from home. I like to think they have been wondering where the guy with the food and water has been.
