Eastern Bluebirds Feed Chicks on a Soggy Arkansas Day

Here in Arkansas, the spring showers have arrived! While we may be seeking shelter from the downpour, another family is facing the elements head-on – the Eastern bluebirds in my yard.

Just a few days ago, I excitedly announced the hatching of their chicks in my previous post, “Eastern Bluebird Nest Update: It’s Hatch Day!“. Today, I wanted to share a glimpse into their dedication as parents, even on a rainy day.

As the pitter-patter of rain echoed on my deck, I noticed a flurry of activity around the bluebird house. Both the male and female were perched on the birdhouse, each with a plump caterpillar in their beak. The photo I’m sharing with you today captures this very moment – a testament to their unwavering commitment to feeding their hungry brood.

Rain or shine, these remarkable birds prioritize the well-being of their young. Their diet consists primarily of insects, a perfect source of protein to fuel the chicks’ rapid growth. Caterpillars, like the ones in the photo, are a favorite food choice for bluebirds.

While the wet weather might seem like a challenge, Eastern bluebirds are well-adapted to Arkansas’s climate. Their feathers are naturally water-repellent, and they can efficiently locate insects even in damp conditions.

Watching these determined parents navigate the rain to deliver their precious cargo of caterpillars is a heartwarming sight. It’s a reminder of the incredible resilience of nature and the unwavering love of a parent for its offspring.

I’ll continue to monitor the progress of the bluebird family and share more updates with you soon. In the meantime, stay dry and appreciate the beauty of nature, even on a rainy day!
