On the evening of September 4, 2024, I decided to hike the first section of the Archaeological Canyon Rock Garden Loop Trail. My goal was to find a spot on the cliffs to photograph wildlife and soak in the stunning views. After some searching, I found the perfect place to settle in.
As I was getting comfortable, a Young Turkey Vulture landed nearby. Now, I’m not one to be easily spooked, but having a vulture show up out of nowhere while I was the only person in Black Mesa State Park got my imagination running wild. I couldn’t help but wonder, “Does this vulture know something I don’t?” Earlier in the day, I posted a video on Facebook showing that I was alone in the park (you can check it out [here]), and now this? It felt eerie, to say the least.
Still, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph this curious bird. After a few shots of the vulture, I didn’t have to wait long before a pair of Red-tailed Hawks began circling above me. I was able to capture several photos of the hawks as they soared gracefully above the cliffs. It was a fantastic sight.
Now, as I write this post on September 5, 2024, I can say with certainty that I made it through the night just fine, despite my run-in with the vulture. There’s another camper here at the park, so I’m not alone anymore. The sun is rising, though clouds are covering the sky, and the wind is howling like crazy. I’m not sure what kind of wildlife photography today will bring, but I’m optimistic—it’s all part of the adventure!
I think it’s a little late to comment on your post, but I still wanted to say that I had a good laugh when I read it.
I can imagine the scene, you alone there with a vulture for company… It certainly doesn’t take much more to give wings to the imagination.
I am glad you got a good night’s sleep after that.
And thank you for sharing your discoveries at Black Mesa State Park. I find them very interesting.
