World Frog and Sparrow Day on the First Day of Spring

Today marks the first day of spring, and it also happens to be World Frog and Sparrow Day. That made me think these two photos were a fitting way to welcome the new season. One shows a frog resting among the rocks, blending into its surroundings with only that bright eye giving it away. The other shows a sparrow perched quietly on a branch, alert and steady, as if watching the season change.

Spring always feels like a reset to me. After the colder months, I start noticing more movement, more sound, and more signs that wildlife is settling into a new rhythm. Frogs and sparrows may not always get the same attention as eagles, hawks, or other larger animals, but they are part of what makes spring feel alive. Their presence is often one of the first reminders that the landscape is waking up again.

The frog in this photo stood out for another reason. My friend and fellow photographer Bret spotted this frog on the auto tour road at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge yesterday morning and pointed it out to me. It blended in so well with the rocky ground that I could have easily missed it otherwise. Moments like that remind me how important it is to pay attention to the small details. Frogs may be easy to overlook, but they play an important role in the natural world, which is one reason I also wrote about World Frog Day and protecting our amphibian friends.

House Sparrow and World Sparrow Day

A House Sparrow perches on a bare branch, a simple subject that fits well with World Sparrow Day.

The sparrow in this photo is a House Sparrow, a bird that is often not liked by many people. Even so, World Sparrow Day is a reminder that the story is not that simple. In the places where House Sparrows originally come from, their numbers have struggled, which is one reason the day was started in the first place. That makes this bird worth a second look. Even a species that people often overlook or dismiss can tell a larger story about change, survival, and the wildlife around us.

Spring Wildlife on World Frog and Sparrow Day

On a day like today, these two animals feel like a good reminder of what spring is really about. It is not only about warmer weather. It is about new activity, familiar sounds, and the return of life all around us. A frog on the ground and a sparrow on a branch may seem simple, but together they say a lot about the season ahead.

As spring begins, I am looking forward to spending more time outdoors with my camera and seeing what the season brings. If these two are any indication, it is already off to a good start.
