Nature never ceases to amaze, and today’s adventure at the Phillip Parks Memorial Fishing Pier in Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma, proved just that. While I’m a frequent visitor to this beautiful spot, each visit brings something new and unexpected.
On this particular day, I was engrossed in photographing a muskrat (Muskrat at Phillip Parks Memorial Fishing Pier) when movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention. To my surprise and delight, I spotted a watersnake gracefully swimming towards several large White Lotus leaves floating serenely on the water’s surface.
I watched as the snake partially hauled itself onto the broad, green platform. The snake seemed content in its unusual perch, allowing me several minutes to capture this rare moment from various angles.
Typically, I encounter these fascinating reptiles basking on logs or swimming through the water. Seeing one utilize a floating lotus leaf as a temporary resting spot was a first for me, and it highlighted the adaptability and opportunistic nature of these creatures.
After taking several shots, I turned my attention back to the muskrat I had originally been observing. When I looked back to check on the snake, it had vanished as silently as it had appeared, leaving behind only ripples on the water’s surface and the gently bobbing lotus leaf.
This encounter serves as a beautiful reminder of the constant surprises nature has in store for those patient enough to observe. It also underscores the importance of protected areas like Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, which provide crucial habitats for a diverse array of wildlife.
Next time you’re out in nature, remember to keep your eyes open and your camera ready. You never know what unexpected and magical moments you might witness!
