On March 20, 2025, while photographing birds from my deck, I witnessed a special moment—the return of Eastern Bluebirds to my yard in Arkansas. A female bluebird carefully carried nesting material to the birdhouse I have set up for them, marking the beginning of their new nesting season.

A Welcome Return of Nesting Bluebirds
Seeing these vibrant birds preparing their home again is a joy. Last year, I documented their nesting journey in a blog series (Eastern Bluebird Saga), which captured their growth, challenges, and triumphs. 2024 was an incredible year for observing and photographing these beautiful songbirds, and it looks like 2025 is off to an equally exciting start.
The Eastern Bluebird Nesting Process Begins
Eastern Bluebirds typically begin nesting in early spring, searching for ideal locations to raise their young. They prefer cavities in trees or bluebird nest boxes placed in open areas. The female constructs the nest using grass, pine needles, and other natural materials, while the male often watches over and protects their territory. Witnessing this bird nesting process firsthand is always fascinating.

How to Encourage Eastern Bluebirds to Nest in Your Yard
If you want to attract Eastern Bluebirds to your yard, providing a well-placed birdhouse is essential. Choose a bluebird box with the right dimensions and an entrance hole of about 1.5 inches in diameter to keep out larger, unwanted birds. Positioning it in a sunny, open space at least five feet off the ground will make it more appealing to them. Additionally, offering mealworms can encourage bluebirds to stay and nest successfully.
Looking Forward to Another Successful Bluebird Nesting Season
Each year, these bluebirds bring life and activity to my yard, and I look forward to documenting their progress once again. The start of their nesting season is a promising sign of new beginnings, and I’m excited to see what unfolds in the coming months. Stay tuned for more updates and bird photography as I continue to follow their journey!
