My photo today features an Eastern Bluebird investigating one of my birdhouses on February 22nd, 2024. Last year, on March 22nd, 2023, I photographed a Bluebird carrying nesting materials to this very same birdhouse “Eastern Bluebird Nest Building“. Perhaps these birds will be starting their nest soon!

I’ve learned that Eastern Bluebirds in Arkansas typically begin nesting the first half of March. However, several factors can influence the exact timing:
- Weather: Colder temperatures can delay nesting.
- Competition: If other birds or an unmated female are present, the bluebirds may wait before constructing their nest.
- Individual variations: Some pairs may nest slightly earlier or later than average.
Based on my location in Lavaca, Arkansas, I can expect to see Eastern Bluebird nest-building around the first week of March.
It’s interesting to note that Arkansas has witnessed a remarkable comeback of Eastern Bluebirds, thanks in part to widespread conservation efforts like the use of man-made nest boxes. If your property or yard has open space, consider installing a bluebird nest box to support their continued success in your area! As I have a two-acre yard, I’ve already installed two nest boxes myself.
