One of my goals during this trip to the Black Mesa area in Oklahoma was to photograph the elusive Bighorn Sheep. After several days of searching, I’m thrilled to share that on Day 7, I finally had a remarkable encounter with a pair of young Bighorn Sheep. This experience was made possible thanks to a tip from a fellow nature enthusiast. While I’m deeply grateful for their guidance, I want to honor their request to keep the specific location private.
Seeing Bighorn Sheep in this area is particularly special because of the species’ unique history here. The presence of these majestic animals in Oklahoma is significant due to a fascinating discovery made on September 21, 2012. A dried carcass of a Bighorn Sheep was found near Black Mesa, marking the first documented evidence of the species in the state. This discovery was a landmark moment, as it provided concrete proof that Bighorn Sheep had indeed made their way into Oklahoma’s Panhandle. The preserved skeleton serves as a specimen, solidifying this remarkable event in the state’s natural history.
The current population of Bighorn Sheep in the Black Mesa area isn’t well-documented, adding to the mystery and excitement of spotting these animals. Their presence here is a reminder of the delicate balance between wildlife and human activities. While these sheep have managed to establish themselves in this rugged landscape, they remain vulnerable to the impact of human activities.
Recreational activities like hiking and off-road vehicle use can disturb Bighorn Sheep, causing stress and potentially leading them to abandon their habitats. Additionally, vehicle traffic poses direct threats, not only through potential collisions but also by creating barriers that isolate populations. It’s a sobering reminder of the need to respect and protect these incredible animals and their habitats.
As I reflect on this encounter, I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed such a rare sight in Oklahoma. The Bighorn Sheep’s resilience and adaptability are truly inspiring, and I hope to continue documenting their presence in this unique part of the state.
Day 7 has been a highlight of my time at Black Mesa, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of this adventure holds.
