Finding Bighorn Sheep at Black Mesa

One of my goals during this trip to the Black Mesa area in Oklahoma was to photograph the elusive Bighorn Sheep. After several days of searching, I finally found them on Day 7. It was a pair of young Bighorn Sheep. This encounter happened because of a tip from a fellow nature enthusiast. While I’m deeply grateful for their guidance, I want to honor their request to keep the specific location private.

The History of Bighorn Sheep at Black Mesa

Seeing Bighorn Sheep here is special. The species has a unique history in this area. The presence of these majestic animals in Oklahoma is significant due to a fascinating discovery made on September 21, 2012. A dried carcass of a Bighorn Sheep was found near Black Mesa, marking the first documented evidence of the species in the state. This discovery was a landmark moment. It proved Bighorn Sheep had reached Oklahoma’s Panhandle. The preserved skeleton now serves as a specimen. It confirms this event in Oklahoma’s natural history.

Why Bighorn Sheep Remain Rare in Oklahoma

The current population at Black Mesa is not well documented. This makes sightings even more exciting. Their presence reminds me how fragile this balance is. While these sheep have managed to establish themselves in this rugged landscape, they remain vulnerable to the impact of human activities.

Recreational activity can disturb Bighorn Sheep. This includes hiking and off-road vehicles. Stress can cause them to leave their habitat. Vehicle traffic also creates danger. Collisions can occur. Roads can isolate small populations. It’s a sobering reminder of the need to respect and protect these incredible animals and their habitats.
