Bald Eagle Flying Over Treetops

City Lake in Charleston, Arkansas, is one of my favorite winter spots for bird photography, especially for capturing Bald Eagles. These majestic birds are a highlight of my trips to this lake, and on the morning of December 31, 2013, I had the chance to photograph one soaring over the treetops.

Bald Eagle Soars Over Treetops
A Bald Eagle soars gracefully over the treetops near City Lake in Charleston, Arkansas, captured on a crisp December morning.

Using my truck as a blind, I parked in the lot near the lake and set up with my camera and lens resting on a bean bag draped over the open window. This method allowed me to capture the eagle in flight without disturbing it. The eagle was gliding gracefully, its sharp eyes scanning the area, and the morning light emphasized the details of its plumage.

Gear & Settings

For this shot, I used:

  • Camera: Canon EOS 1D Mark III
  • Lens: Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS

The technical details were:

  • Aperture: f/8.0
  • Shutter Speed: 1/3200 sec
  • ISO: 400
  • Exposure Compensation: 0
  • Focal Length: 500mm

The fast shutter speed was necessary to freeze the eagle’s movement as it soared through the sky. Combined with the f/8 aperture, it ensured sharp focus on the bird while keeping the treetops slightly softened for a natural background.

Why I Photograph Bald Eagles

Bald Eagles are a symbol of strength and freedom, and watching them in flight is always a powerful experience. City Lake provides a unique opportunity to see these birds in action, especially during winter months when they’re more active in the area.

This particular shot stands out to me because it captures the elegance of the eagle’s flight and its connection to the natural environment. It’s moments like these that remind me why I dedicate so much time to wildlife photography.
