A Turkey-filled Morning at Black Mesa State Park

During my stay at Black Mesa State Park in Oklahoma, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing plenty of wild turkeys. Thursday morning was cloudy and windy, so I decided to take it easy, stay at my campsite, and process some photos. At around 8:30 A.M., I heard some noise outside my camper, and when I went to check it out, I found a group of turkeys strolling through my campsite.

I quickly grabbed my camera and began photographing them. One of the turkeys was especially close, so I managed to get a nice portrait shot. After crossing the road, they made their way up the hillside. It turns out, even when I thought I wouldn’t be photographing anything that day, the turkeys had other plans—and I’m glad they did!

Later in the morning, I took a walk through the campground and spotted even more turkeys. This time, it was a group of toms, and I was able to get a quick photo of one that ventured close.

It seems like every day, turkeys make their way through the campsite. They’ve made it their gathering spot, and I’ve enjoyed every opportunity to photograph them. A few days ago, I wrote about photographing wild turkeys as they stripped seeds to eat, and you can check that out here: [Day 2: Wildlife Photography at Black Mesa State Park].

I’m sure I’ll be seeing plenty more turkeys before this trip is over!
