Eastern Bluebird Enjoys a Birdbath

This Eastern Bluebird birdbath visit quickly turned into a backyard spa day. The female soaked, splashed, and left her feathers looking quite disheveled.

An Eastern Bluebird Birdbath Break

In March 2023, Eastern Bluebirds were building a nest in one of my birdhouses. The female stayed busy carrying out much of the nest-building work.

Meanwhile, the male remained nearby and watched for possible danger. The pair seemed to have their roles worked out.

On March 12, the female stopped at my birdbath. After all that activity around the birdhouse, she appeared ready for a good soak.

She settled into the water before fluttering and splashing. Her feathers soon looked even more rumpled than before. That only made the scene more entertaining to watch.

Nest Building and a Backyard Spa Day

I photographed this bathing female in my yard in Lavaca, Arkansas. The time was about 11:20 that morning.

I watched from inside my pickup, which was parked in the driveway. This gave me a good view while allowing the bluebird to continue bathing.

Seeing her in the water added another moment to the nesting story unfolding in my yard. I had watched the female working on the nest while the male stood guard. Now she had traded the birdhouse for the birdbath.

The first photo shows her soaking in the water. In the second image, she begins splashing and fluttering. That lively frame best captures the fun of the moment.

Another Memorable Bluebird Bath

Eastern Bluebirds always seem to bring something interesting to my yard. Sometimes it involves nesting behavior. Other times, a simple stop at the birdbath becomes the highlight of my morning.

I have also photographed an Eastern Bluebird Bathing in the Rain. Each bathing moment has its own look and personality.

A birdbath can provide more than water for backyard birds. It can also offer a close look at behavior that often happens quickly. On this morning, I was fortunate to watch and photograph the entire little spa session.

  1. Love the blog! Great job capturing her life! When we moved into our house last summer I watched a cardinal bath in the wet leaves of my yew which was right in front of my window. She too enjoyed a spa day. It made a impression on me.
