A Red-breasted Nuthatch Looking For Water

I was cleaning the bird bath in my yard when this Red-breasted Nuthatch started getting impatient. I finally moved out-of-the-way so that it could see that I needed to add water.

Note: Check out the amazing feet on this Red-breasted Nuthatch. I also want to mention what the background is in each of these photos, brown pine needles on the ground.

Don’t you just love it when they are so inquizative & impatient they can hardly wait for you to finish your work. The feet ARE amazing, I had never really noticed bird’s feet until your pictures, they are all so different, I guess Nuthatchs need those big feet & long toenails for running around and up & down trees. The pine needles are a perfect backdrop against their red breast.

Super – I have a few of the white-breasted species running up and down my trees and one that loves the side of my drive shed – peering into the cavities made by woodpeckers and checking out the birdhouses that my predecessor posted there. These birds make me smile. I’ve often referred to them as the clowns of the bird world. Great shots Steve, and a neat story behind the little fellow.

These shots are spectacular, Steve! The detail and lighting are wonderful. Beautiful birds with very interesting large feet. I hope this impatient nuthatch stuck around for some fresh water. Your images … perfection!
