The Pied-billed Grebe is such an amazing little bird. I have never seen one flying. Have you?
1. It is rarely seen flying and prefers to sink out of sight when danger threatens.
2. It migrates at night.
3. It does not have webbed feet.
4. The downy chicks sleep on the back of a parent. (This is something else I have not been able to photograph yet.)
5. It sounds like it belongs in the jungles of Africa. (Listen and see if you agree)

I love these little Grebes!
pert little bird! excellent shot.
I had no idea they migrate at night….. very cool birds indeed – and they seem to be everywhere! I saw one yesterday in the Puget Sound in Washington State! Thanks for the (always) great post, Steve!
Fantastic photograph! They are truly a delight! Oh how I would love to see the little chicks sleeping atop a parents back.
Beautiful pics of this little bird, love their sounds too, have heard it often, but didn’t know what it was. Great reflection! Thanks Steve!
I played the calls, and my Green Cheeked Conure was facinated, LOL.
When I was young and stupid, the family got a 78 LP record of bird calls, we had a parakeet, and when we would play the hawk, it would climb under the paper in the bottom of the cage! I know that was mean, but at the time I thought it was funny, that a domestic bird would recognize the danger.
I loved the site with the bird calls, but will respect my poor Conure’s fear factor now that I am grown up!
