Seeing The Great Horned Owl Again

The Great Horned Owl

Great Horned Owl at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge

I posted photos of this Great Horned Owl back in June and I am still able to locate it most of the time when I go back to the same area.

The Great Horned Owl is the heaviest extant owl in Central and South America and is the second heaviest owl in North America, after the closely related but very different looking Snowy Owl.

Adults have large ear tufts and it is the only very large owl in its range to have them. (Its “horns” are neither ears nor horns, simply tufts of feathers.)

Steve, it is always great to have a formal portrait like this. This one would make a good 16 x 20 framed picture in you home. What resolution do you use for these shots? I really like these birds. When I used to go back to Webbers Falls, OK in the Summer, I would hear owls hooting down on the Canadian river (about a mile away) every night. The hooting of owls like the song of the Whipporwill is something that is fast disappearing from the Earth. Habitat destruction and wild cats are eliminating the Whipporwill.

This is just beautiful. How lucky you are, being able to spot it most of the time.

Frank, the sun was just starting to rise and I didn’t have much light so I had to bump my ISO up to 1250 at f4 and 1/100 sec.

    Thanks Lisa!

Yes, this would be great framed and hanging in any home, would may a perfect gift for the wildlife & bird affectionado. How special for you that you get to see it so often, I can hear them again & again, but many times never see them.

Fabulous shot! I’m so jealous!! I have them in my neighborhood but I’ve never gotten a photograph of one! From the looks of that branch it’s a favorite resting spot of his! :)

wonderful shot – it’s interesting that his “ears” look shorter than they did in other shots you’ve taken… and obviously Trish is right – this must be a favourite resting spot… lucky you to get this fellow.
