No Name Lake: Gone?

by Steve Creek on November 11, 2009 · 10 comments

Yesterday I got up early and headed to one of my favorite small lakes to watch the sunrise and the wildlife. This is a small shallow lake that I can always count on seeing Great Blue Herons and Whitetail Deer. I have taken a lot of photos here and always felt that the wildlife did not mind me being around. Most of the time I would have the lake to myself because most people do not even know the lake is here.

When I arrived and unloaded my stuff and was walking up to the edge of the lake I could tell something was not right. It was to quiet. The sun started to show more of the lake and I could see that the lake had been drained. What a shock! I was just here a few days ago and could not believe that this had happened in such a short time. I saw a total of three big trenches cut into the dam of the lake to allow most of the water to drain.

I’m not sure what the plan is for this lake but I’m afraid it is not good. A major highway is being built nearby and I guess this lake is in the way. I am staying positive that this lake is just being expanded but I know I’m just dreaming.

I have seen so much wildlife habitat destroyed over the years here in Arkansas. Most of it is these small little gems that no one seems to care about.

The only wildlife that showed for a photograph was this Bullfrog and it appeared sad:

This is awful! I wish there was some way to change this. Isn’t there some law about wetlands? I believe if we keep harming Mother Nature we are going to pay big time.

Thats so sad, and that frog looks sad. Great photos but a stark reminder of the damage humans do and it p’s me off! Thanks for sharing pics and the story Steve.

Such a shame there should be laws about it. There are in the uk although these are broken regularly but still we’ll pay in the end and hopefully karma will reap it’s vengence!!

Broke my ankle and had to have surgery, so just catching up. I agree with all of the above.
Have you found anything out Steve? If I’m not mistaken, and because I used to raise polywogs/tadpoles, it looks like to me, this four-legged frog hasn’t quite lost it’s tail yet. Is that it, beside the left back leg? Or do my eyes deceive me? Probably the latter.

Lili, I had to go back and look at another photo of the frog but I think what we are seeing is part of the old minnow basket.

I have not heard anything yet on the lake.
