The Red-bellied Woodpecker is a daily visitor to my property.
Tips from the All About Birds website:
If you live near any wooded patches, you may be able to attract them using feeders filled with suet (in winter), peanuts, and sometimes sunflower seeds. They’ve even been spotted drinking nectar from hummingbird feeders. Dead trees may encourage the birds to forage naturally or even nest in your yard, and they may feed on berry trees such as hawthorn or mountain-ash in fall or winter.

I watched a hawk take down a morning dove and kill it right outside my window, then fly away with the body… it was an awesome thing to watch, sad for the dove, but the hawk’s gotta do what a hawk’s gotta do you know.
Your red bellied woodpecker shots are fabulous.
Steve, that’s a female red-bellied woodpecker. The red cap on the male extends all the way down to the top of the bill.
I agree with Karen Lund Steve – that is a female red-bellied woodpecker. Great shots though.
Thanks for the correction Ladies!
Beautiful birds!
Outstanding images! Terrific detail.
Awesome photos Steve! I can’t wait until I see one someday.
Thanks everyone! The good thing about these birds for a photographer is that they let you get close.
Great shots Steve!
She is a beauty Steve! Both shots are incredible.
Thanks Dawn and Debbie!
Another terrific photo. A breath of cool, fresh air to view. Thanks for sharing your talent! Best regards, Desiree
Thank you Desiree!
Love the face on 1st photo, but the food on the beak of the 2nd makes me smile. Love all woodpeckers, they are so bright and fearless.
Outstanding photos Steve!
Thanks Judi and Linda!
Great shots. I’ve never been able to see the red belly before.
Great shot and a beautiful bird!
Thank you both!
I live in Kansas City, MO and just witnessed this bird today! I’ve never seen one before and was curious as to what it was! It was poking around on the ground. By the way it moved it gave me the impression that it may be a woodpecker. I’m glad that my assumption proved to be true!
Katherine, I’m glad my photo helped with your ID.
