

The numbers of these birds have declined in some areas due to loss of habitat. The Least Bittern are still fairly common, but more often heard than seen. They prefer to escape on foot and hide than to take flight. These birds make cooing and clucking sounds, usually in early morning or near dusk.

Beautiful closeup shots of the Least Bittern, Steve! I’ve gotten some decent shots of American Bitterns on a couple of trips down closer to the coast, but as yet have not seen the Least Bitterns there. There’s a lot more difference in their appearance than I realized.
