I saw this Copperhead snake frozen in this position when I went back to my vehicle which was parked on the side of the road. I took a few quick photos and then quickly went on my way.
Note: Copperheads bite more people in most years than any other U.S. species. Copperhead bites are typically not fatal but are very painful.

I really like this.
500mm that’s about as close as I’d want to get too.
Thanks and I agree about 500mm being as close as I need to be.
This shot screams for wide angle up close;) Just kidding.
I really like the composition and the depth of field. It works perfectly. Beautiful snake!
Thanks Jeff! I am known for getting up close with wildlife but I do know my limits.
Fantastic shot, Steve. Around here copperheads are second only to black snakes in frequency of sightings.
Thanks Marvin!
nice shot of the Copperhead. I am disappointed I can’t use my macro lens on this snake…I’m not getting the clarity I want from 3 feet away…your shot is beautifully crisp
Thank you! Most of the time I use a Canon 100-400 lens for this type of photo but I had the Canon 500 when I took this.
Well, nice to see the pic …
I was recently at the Bastrop State Park my friend and I went twice to look for this creature but had no luck. We were kind of disappointed. But now I am happy to put a picture to a FACE!

I Jusr got the shock of my life. A city girl recenly relocated to the MO countryside, I went to take my 3 dogs out this AM. There was a much talked about Copperhead at the foot of our steps. I will never complain about my husbands knife collection again.
Jan, I’m glad you or your pets were not hurt.
