It is amazing to see people walking up to these animals. (I have a long lens and plus I was in my vehicle.) This is the warning posted by the refuge: These animals are not tame. You are a visitor in their pasture. Do not venture afoot into open pastures close to buffalo. Although they may look clumsy, they are extremely agile and fast. THEY CAN AND WILL CHARGE WITH LITTLE OR NO WARNING!
The current bison herd at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is maintained at approximately 650 animals. Excess animals are sold live at public auction, which is held the fourth Thursday of every October. Since 1907, more than 10,000 animals have been removed from the Refuge by sale or donation in order to preserve the high quality of Wichita grasslands.

Beautiful animals!
definitely wouldn’t get too close.
Steve, people get too close to Bison here on Antelope Island State Park. It is foolish because I have seen them charge at people. They are huge, powerful and wild animals. People shouldn’t think they are tame. Wonderful images.
Oh I love the shot of the one in the water… such a powerful image.
Love these pics, can’t choose one over the other, such diversity & COLOR!
Great shots Steve.
Love the bison photos; the calves are adorable! Yes I saw tourists doing absolutely insane things with bison in Yellowstone. I think some people think that National parks are Disneyland or something.
Thanks everyone!
