Bird Coughing Up Hairball

by Steve Creek on July 21, 2010 · 10 comments

Alright! I know birds don’t cough up hairballs but it sure looks like one.

Regurgitation is the forceful expulsion of the contents of the mouth, esophagus, or crop. A bird that is regurgitating will often bob its head and stretch out its neck, and the food does not look digested, e.g., whole seeds are regurgitated. Regurgitation is usually a normal behavior.

Looks just like my cats about to cough up a hairball, just don’t have to clean up after the birds, thank goodness. It is always exciting on your site, you are able to give us new insite to wildlife. Thanks for the education Steve!

Love these photos, even if the second one has a little “ick factor” with the hairball and all…lol! Beautiful bird and nice shots!
