While photographing Gulls at Kerr Dam in Oklahoma, I was keeping an eye on a few American White Pelicans hoping they would do more than just swim around. The above photo is the best they had to offer. Don’t get me wrong! I’m not complaining! One of these days I would like to photograph one scooping up some fish.

Beautiful…. awesome shot ..thanks for sharing. Blessings
Nice!
He’s beautiful.
Steve, when you photograph birds like this, what focal length do you use and are you on a tripod or hand held?
I just think your work is incredible.
Specially like the middle one – these birds seem so ungainly yet you make them appear graceful. I agree with you a shot of one scooping fish would be awesome – but this series is pretty amazing in itself.
Terri, I am at 400 or 500 it just depends on what lens I am using at the time. Most of the time I am using the Canon 500 F4 while at Kerr Dam. I shoot hand held and with a tripod. This also depends on what lens I am using. If I use the 500 I am on a tripod because of the weight of the lens. I like shooting the Canon 100-400 and the Canon 400 f5.6 hand held.
Nice job with the pelicans. They can be so infuriatingly “lazy” when you want them to perform for the camera! You did well in capturing these shots. Kudos! I look forward to following your blog here in the future!
Come down to Baton Rouge! A big pod always shows up at the LSU lakes and they feed at sundown and sunup. But of course they don’t dive for fish like brown pelicans, they feed cooperatively and push all the fish together.
May I have permission to include your photo in graduate course Technology in Education piece for my e portfolio; it will not be published except to satisfy my course requirements.
Thank you in advance…the photos are very nice.
