I have another family of Eastern Bluebirds being raised in my yard. I am always fascinated by what they feed their young. If you look close you will see a Buffalo gnat on the Bluebird in the first photo. They are really a problem this year for the birds.

These are spectacular images, Steve! The detail is exquisite! How wonderful that you have a second pair of bluebirds raising young on your property. I know from watching bluebirds on our land, bluebirds spend the days seeking bugs constantly to feed their hungry little ones. Love your close-ups!

Stunning images Steve. I must confess I had not heard the term buffalo gnat, but did see while I lived on our OK farm little black flies constantly all over our cattle and horses. Cow and horse tails are quite good in swatting them. I see by googling buffalo gnat that they are a real problem. What is the object below the eye of the bird in the second image? You are producing images that might be of value in many scientific studies.

Frank, I’m thinking that is also a Buffalo Gnat. The wet weather has really created a hatch of them this year. I didn’t realize that they bother the birds so much.

Oh I’m so jealous of your bluebirds… my 13 boxes have attracted six families of tree swallows who have driven away the bluebirds… so I hung another little nest box near where they had a family last year and am crossing my fingers. Bluebirds are close to the top of my favourites list, if not at the top.

Stunning photos Steve… just amazing – all your commentors are right!

congrats on your 3d bluebird family, does that make you a foster daddy? Love the close ups showing the tiny rim of feathers around the eye, great pics of a beautiful bird.

Some wonderful photos Steve. Although their meals look a little sketchy to me, perhaps they wouldn’t have cared much for the goat curry I had for lunch yesterday. ;)
