I always enjoy watching how the White-breasted Nuthatch moves up and down a tree.
The White-breasted Nuthatch forages for insects on trunks and branches, and is able to move head-first down trees. Seeds form a substantial part of its winter diet, as do acorns and hickory nuts that were stored by the bird in the fall. The nest is in a hole in a tree, and the breeding pair may smear insects around the entrance as a deterrent to squirrels.

great catch!!
Such charming little birds, in my top 10 favorites! You captured their delicate coloring so well.
Spectacular detail; classic pose; nice light!
From a historical perspective this is a recent arrival in the north. It has been expanding its range for the last 70 years or so. Seems to be a good predictor of warming climates in the north.
Nice photo.

Thanks everyone for leaving the great comments!
What great photos of a beautiful little bird!
White-breasted nuthatches are the clowns of the bird world to me with the way they seem to run up and down the trees head first. There are several that visit my feeders daily – but I’ve never caught such great pictures… Well done Steve.
