Robin Removing Fecal Sac

I took this photo of this Robin removing waste from her young (fecal sac) back in 2008. I am not sure why I didn’t post it before now but here you go in case you have never seen this done before.

If you want to see an even closer few of a Red-winged Blackbird doing this you can go here: A Mothers Work Is Never Done

Wonderful! Such a great display of a mother bird, well, being a mother bird. Thanks so much. Terrific photos!

Where the heck would I ever see this done? I didn’t know this occurred. You’re an amazing photographer and teacher. Great shots Steve.

I agree with Lili, never seen this before your photography, nor would I climb up high enough to get shots like this. Giving you a new name Prof. Creek! I’ve probably learned more from you in a year than 2 years of Wildlife Conservation Field Studies in college. Beautiful crisp, clear colors.

Thanks everyone! Judi, I got lucky and this nest was only about 5′ high!

Another great series!! I had never seen a fecal sac until your pics of the red winged black bird last year. Because of those pics last year I witnessed the parents of our new babies leaving the nest with fecal sacs this last spring. (No, I didn’t see them removing the sacs from babies) I agree with Lili and Ms King that I have learned so much from your awesome photos.

Interesting and gross too! Were those pictures in reverse order?

Robert, some of those are taken at different times but I think they are all in order.

Great photos, I was lucky enough once to witness a momma bird both feed her babies and taking away the waste, I was amazed at the size of both.
