I walked up on this Red-tailed Hawk watching this squirrel and just knew that I was fixing to see this hawk catching his lunch. The Fox squirrel was either teasing the hawk or it was doing this for my benefit because it was running underneath the telephone pole the hawk was perched on. At one time it even ran part way up the pole.
I saw that the hawk was getting ready to swoop down toward the squirrel so I got ready.
For some reason the Red-tailed Hawk just flew toward the trees and made a low pass and then turned and flew back to the telephone pole. It paid no attention to the squirrel. The Fox squirrel finally left the area after putting on a show for the hawk and I.

No accounting for taste…or squirrel for breakfast already?
Even though we aren’t there to see this action you describe it so well and with your photos one can just picture this happening. I love the one with the hawk leaving the pole!! Super photos.
Looking for an appetizer and squirrel was the main course? Nice photos.
One squirrel saved…for the time being…Great photos!

Wow – just seeing that look in the hawk’s eye in the first picture is enough! Such intensity! Wonderful shots Steve and a good story to go with it!
I agree with everyone, wonderful story series, and you captured the intensity of the hawk watching the squirrel superbly. Maybe the hawk decided not to eat such a gutsy squirrel, or maybe he thought “Mad Squirrel Disease!!!” Your work just gets better and better.
Great images and it must’ve been fun to witness. Thanks for sharing your experience!
