A perennial favorite among people, the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states.
The oldest recorded Northern Cardinal was 15 years 9 months old.

The distinction between a heron and an egret is rather vague, and depends more on appearance than biology. The word “egret” comes from the French word “aigrette”, referring to the long filamentous feathers that seem to cascade down an egret’s back during the breeding season.

The Snakes Are Out

I went out to take photos Sunday at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma and I was seeing lots of snakes.

American Black Vulture-0623

I saw a couple of these American Black Vultures on Fort Chaffee. This is the first for me. I mostly see Turkey Vultures in this area (Buzzards).

I am not sure what is going on with this Whitetail, but it appears to still have its winter coat. It also looks like it is about to drop a fawn very soon.
